Just a few days left..

Christmas and New Years are just around the corner. This is a very action packed time of year for many people..I can only imagine how full the malls are this weekend and how many of us will be out in force to catch the after Christmas sales. Then New Years eve and New Years day and finally 2013. I can hardly believe it. A brand new year already?

For some reason I am always surprised to see the present year ending.. didn’t it just start? Wasn’t it just January 2012 a few minutes ago? It must be my age..or the busyness of our culture. We are all moving so fast..trying to accomplish so much..making sure that we don’t miss anything.

I don’t want to miss today.. I want to live fully in this present day..today Saturday December 22, 2012. This day will never come again..it is a gift and I want to savor.. to make it last..enjoy it..appreciate it.. Thank God for it. Life is a gift and we become more aware of this when tragedy strikes. Last week lives of children were taken, and because of that horrendous act.. we were all reminded that life is fragile and fleeting.

As we celebrate the life of Jesus and His entrance into the world, let’s celebrate by cherishing our lives..living fully and being willing to grieve the loss of the innocent. God is with us in this time and He holds in His arms those precious children that He created. He is the redeemer and He came to make all things right. We are safe in Him

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.'”

While spending time with my oldest granddaughter, we went up to her room. I noticed that she had her two dolls in their bed with the blanket on..they were definitely sound asleep. I asked her about it..after all it was the middle of the day. She said “Grandma, they are hibernating.” Some how the image of those two peaceful dolls sound asleep..without a care in the world.. stuck in my mind.

If only..we could just hibernate like that. What a relief..just crawl into bed and sleep until the Winter is over…  remembering to wake up with the first signs of Spring in the air.. Unfortunately we can’t so we have to make the best of the winter months. The holidays are upon us and soon they will pass..it will be like the quiet after a storm. A good time to reflect and remember..the year is ending and a new one is beginning.

God is at work in the winter..we may end up being alone more..inside more.. less busy. He is calling to us to come and rest in Him..to be still. Maybe we should start now..right in the middle of the Christmas rush.  After all  it is the Advent season..a time to anticipate..to long for..to prepare..to acknowledge our Great God. He is Immanuel..God with us..His ways are not our ways and He is the giver of all  good gifts. Let’s celebrate Him and maybe then..we can hibernate just a little 🙂

Anticipate Joy

That is the theme from Living the Christian Year for the third week of Advent. What exactly is meant by that phrase? There are references to the second coming..the time when He will return, not as a baby, but in His glory. No one knows when that will happen. So what do we do in the meantime? Can we anticipate and prepare for something that we may not see in our lifetimes? Sounds tricky to me.

So..as usual I take the bigger picture into account. The one that we live in every day. The story of God unfolding in our lives as we choose to step out in faith with Him. Our God invites us to be fully engaged with those around us.. not waiting for the day. God is here with us.. He is Immanuel. We are reminded of this in one of my favorite Christmas carols. He is working and moving and restoring everything in its time. If that is really true we can anticipate joy every single day.

You know by now that I am not saying that every moment will be joyful..but I am convinced there is joy to be found in at least a few minutes of every day. He provides joy in the midst of our pain and sorrow. He interrupts our lives with sweet moments that will never happen again. He surprises us when we least expect it. This is our God.. the one who created us and cares for us. Yes.. He has joy for us..Let’s anticipate together.

“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
