Not by sight. Remember that verse from Hebrews 11. I was reading that chapter this morning and I realized that it was foundational for me. Like you..I want to see ahead…it is a natural desire for many of us. We seem to be wired to look into the future..wishing we had a crystal ball. The thing that helps me the most is to look back..to remember..to see where I have been. We can be so eager to move forward that we forget to reflect on how far He has taken us. My life was in total chaos 12 years ago..I felt like I had no future at all. It was a crisis of faith. All I knew was that God was still God.
As I look back over this last decade I see the restoration and rebuilding that He has done and I am amazed. He led me out of the wilderness into the promised land and I didn’t even realize He was doing it. I was over 50 when all this happened..too old for new things..too tired to keep trying..He carried me over the threshold into the land of milk and honey. I often tell people that my life started over..it wasn’t a new chapter..it was a new book. “By faith Alicia believed God and He was faithful to give her more than she could ever ask for.” That is the legacy I would leave for my grandchildren if I died today. Yes..He is a great God that will keep all His promises in His time.
Are you in a season of waiting..doubting..a crisis of faith? Keep trusting and believing. Read Hebrews 11 and remember they were all just people like you and me. They weren’t supernatural beings with supernatural faith..they were humans who struggled and doubted and felt like giving up..just as we do. He came through for them and He will do that for you. He loves to be trusted..it shows Him that we understand His love for us and that we believe in His goodness.
“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us the assurance about things we cannot see.”
I try to think about this blog and post to it as often as possible..ideally it would be every day..but life interferes with that idea. Why every single day? Because every morning when we wake up..or in the midst of a sleepless night..God has something new to say. He is waiting for us to come and ask Him about the day. What do you have in store for this day, Lord? What new thing do you want to do? Interrupt my day, Lord, with a fresh glimpse of your activity in my life. Teach me to sit still so you can speak to me. Help me to realize how much I need you..even if all my ducks are in a row.
Walking with God is a daily thing..receiving His grace happens daily..comfort and reassurance are needed daily. Each day we make decisions..we relate to people..we have opportunities..we face new circumstances. This is true even if we never leave the house. We may talk on the phone..email someone..pray for a friend..write in a journal..cook dinner..wash clothes..feed the cat..clean up our desk..whatever we do..God is with us and He is speaking to us. He is teaching us to lean on Him moment by moment..to remember His presence..to rely on His wisdom..to grow closer to His heart.
When I come home and look around I see God’s fingerprints all over my home. The things that others have given me…the beautiful view..the quiet..His provision is evident. I never imagined living in such a beautiful place..enjoying such an abundant life. He had this in mind for me back when things were very different. He kept all my desires in His Heart and when it was time He began to unfold this life that I could never have imagined.
He is doing the same for you. He is holding on to your dreams nad desires. He has not forgotten you..in fact He remembers things you may have forgotten over the years. He is the perfect friend, Father, brother..He longs to have that time with you daily when you remember His goodness and He renews your hope.
” His mercies are new every morning! Great is His faithfulness!”
At this time of the year we see those puffy white clouds drifting overhead. The afternoons can be sleepy and almost dreamy. Summer is finally gone..the rain has started..fall is here and a shift seems to be taking place. I usually feel melancholy in this season. I wonder if it is just the reality of another year almost over. Time is passing so quickly and here we are approaching 2011. What happened?
Life moves quickly..too quickly for my taste. I want to savour every day. To remain fully present in the moment so I don’t miss anything. It is a gift. Everyday is an amazing opportunity to experience life more fully. I’m not claiming I always do this..but my heart’s desire is to be grateful for every moment.. to appreciate each day..to enjoy the beauty that surrounds me. So much of my life was rushing from one thing to another..being so busy just surviving.. I don’t think I realized that someday I would actually begin to see the finish line.
I hope you are able to relax and enjoy the holiday season that is just around the corner. Taking time for long walks..deep conversations..meaningful relationships..wonderful meals..good books. Life is short and time flies. We can embrace this life fully.. if we do we will never be sorry. Let’s enjoy this amazing life that our Creator has given us..soaking it in..celebrating..remembering His goodness in the land of the living.
“For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation.”
This is the beginning of a verse that reminds us to think about those things that focus us on the goodness of God. He wants us to to think about what He has done for us..to be grateful and thankful. We are not naturally that way. It is easier to look at what we don’t have than to apprecitate what we do have. Our human nature is not easily satisfied.. always longing for something more. God knows our dilemma that’s why He tells us to be dwell on those things that are true and lovely.
What things is He talking about? The truth that He is always for us.. that we are not forgotten..that our desires matter to Him..that He is our provider..that He is close to the brokenhearted. If we remember these things we can learn to rejoice in our present circumstances. As we are thankful for what we do have..for who we are..for where we are in our journey..our spirits will be lifted. We will find it easier to continue..to wait..to trust..to believe. Life here is not easy..there are challenges that face us daily and we are often worn out and tired. God knows all this. He is not offering a simple answer or a platitude. He is giving us a key..one that will help us survive the trials and tests. Be grateful..remember My goodness..Stay close to Me. Don’t worry about anything. Instead pray about everything.
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me–everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
